Let's feed ice-cream to the rats
3 - 30 September 2007
'Let's feed ice-cream to the rats' was realized in front of cafe 'Uit de kunst' in the city centre of Delft. Curator Els Cornelis offered me this opportunity to make my first temporary 'material arrangement' in the public space of this middle sized Dutch city.
For this site specific work I collected waste and arranged these materials inside a phone booth that was especially there to exhibit art. It was my aim with this thought provoking work to stimulate an active interaction with passersby.
'Let's feed ice-cream to the rats' responded to passive consumerism. With post-it messages the work was teasing and provocating to stimulate a dialogue.
While this work was on show people started to attach their messages on the windows of this booth. At a certain moment this interactive exchange became agressive and some people even threw food against the phone booth and attached angry messages.
With this work I intended to make an ambiguous 'monument' for today’s passivity towards the consumption society.
